Church of St. John the Theologian at Kaneo

This piece was a real triumph of effort. It took 80 hours of minute pen work. I used hatching, pointillism, and finally, an ink wash over the entire piece on archival cotton.
I loved the in depth detail of the architecture and brick work. The church was built in the 1300's and I found it novel that none of the brick lines or edges of the buildings are level anymore!

A sub-genre of my work is ink illustrations encompassing a family's name and its meaning.
The Ostrander's have seven children, hence seven arrows. The apple have family historical significance, but also indicate that all seven children were homeschooled by their mother. The hands shaking are from the Sandoz family crest. The knot is from the Knutson family crest. The book indicates the family's emphasis on education. The cross represents their Christian belief.
