“Cavvy” is an old term for a ranch's herd of saddle horses. “Remuda” is another word that means about the same.
Cowboys usually had strings of their own horses that ran together with all the other horses in a large herd for the whole ranch. The jingler would bring in the herd and the cowboys would catch their horses for the day. They usually rode several depending on the work needing to be done.
