The Sandhills have a unique ecology and landscape. They are the largest grass stabilized sand dunes in the northern hemisphere and have a desert climate. However, due to the water table being only feet below the surface, they also have abundant ground water. This makes windmills ideal in this area. Some of the groundwater is alkaline so often windmills are near bodies of water to deliver clean drinking water to cattle so they don't have to drink alkaline water, which they will if they have no other choice.
